How to Regain Control Over Snacking

It’s no secret that many of us have a love/hate relationship with snacks. We love the taste, the convenience, and the energy they give us… but we hate the guilt, the calorie counting, and the way they can sabotage our diet goals. If you’re struggling to regain control over your snacking habits, read on for some tips and tricks to help get you back on track!

  1. Keep a food journal.
One of the best ways to gain control over your snacking is to keep a food journal. For one week, write down everything you eat and drink, including snacks. At the end of the week, take a look at your journal and see what patterns emerge. Do you tend to snack more when you’re bored? When you’re stressed? When you’re tired? Recognizing your triggers can be a powerful tool in helping you regain control over your snacking habits.
  2. Stock your kitchen with healthy snacks.
If unhealthy snacks are what’s tripping you up, then it stands to reason that stocking your kitchen with healthier options will make it easier for you to make smart choices when hunger strikes. Some great options include fruit, nuts, seeds, low-fat yogurt, whole grain crackers, and veggies with dip. By keeping these healthy snacks within easy reach, you’ll be less likely to mindlessly munch on empty calories when hunger hits.
  3. Give yourself permission to indulge… sometimes.
Let’s face it: denying yourself all of your favourite foods is setting yourself up for failure. Instead of depriving yourself, give yourself permission to indulge in your favourite snack foods… but do it mindfully. Pay attention to how the food makes you feel both physically and emotionally. Savour each bite, and stop when you’re satisfied—not stuffed. Allowing yourself this guilty pleasure from time to time will help take the fun out of overeating, and make it easier for you to stick to your goals in between indulgences.

Making changes to our eating habits can be tough, but it’s not impossible! By following these simple tips, you can regain control over your snacking and start making better choices for your health— without feeling deprived or stressed in the process.
